Choosing An Assisted Living Facility

Many people have health and psychological issues that make it so they are able to live on their own, but they still need to have certain needs taken care of for them. In these cases, assisted living facilities are often the best option. When one lives in an assisted living facility, they get to maintain their independence, while knowing that all of their needs are taken care of, from meal preparation, bathing and medications to transportation and mobility. Choosing an assisted living facility can be difficult, because there are so many things to consider, and you want to make sure that you (or a loved one who needs this assistance) are going to be comfortable and happy. Here are some things to look for before making that final decision about which assisted living facility to move to.

Does It Feel like Home?

If it doesn't feel like home, you are never going to feel like you are at home. The atmosphere should be homey and welcoming. When you visit each facility, take a look at the various types of apartments offered, and what each apartment includes (kitchens, private bath, etc.). Also, look for things like grab bars in the shower area, separate thermostats for each apartment, natural lighting, décor, view, and storage. You should be able to feel as comfortable in an assisted living facility as you would be in your own home.

What Are the People Like?

Get out and meet the people at the assisted living facility. Talk to the staff, and see if they actually care about the residents are genuine. Talk to some of the residents as well, and find out how they like living there. You can learn a lot by getting away from the staff and talking to the people who are actually living there and experience what you potentially may experience yourself by moving there. If the residents seem happy, independent, and have no complaints, it is likely a great place to live. Don't forget to ask about social activities, including games, outings, and church services.

Is the Place Safe?

Safety must be one of the most important considerations when it comes to choosing the right assisted living facility. Things that you will want to look into include round-the-clock staff, secure entrances and exits, fire alarms, sprinklers, smoke detectors, emergency call systems in each apartment/room, and lighting. You should also inquire about wheelchair accessibility, handrails in halls, and walk-in showers.

What Amenities Does the Facility Have?

Finally, find out what amenities are available at the various assisted living facilities you check out. Check to see if there is a calendar of events, transportation for shopping, exercise rooms, a common room for socializing, a library, a beauty salon, access to groceries, etc.
